The Certificate program offers an integrated curriculum in drama
therapy to those who are interested in acquiring the basic
fundamentals of theory and practice in drama therapy. The Certificate
is a 45-unit quarter credit course of study. Upon completion of the
Certificate, qualified students who have a Master's Degree in a
related field will have satisfied the academic requirements for
"Alternate Training for Drama Therapists," set by the National
Association for Drama Therapy, and after fulfilling additional
requirements and hours may apply to be certified as Registered Drama
Therapist.
For individuals interested in integrating drama therapy, narrative
and creative arts an additional specialization may be earned for
Narradrama (Integrating Drama Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and
Creative Arts.) This specialization requires an additional 12 units
which includes a supervisory class.
Courses: A
wide range of courses in drama therapy and related areas are offered
including core drama therapy and psychology courses as well as
electives including Life Scripts, Assessment and Treatment in Drama
Therapy, Narrative Approaches to Drama Therapy, Drama Therapy for
Conflict Resolution and many others. Each 3-credit quarter course
requires 45 hours which includes homework time. Each 1 unit course
requires 15 hours which includes homework time.
Credit for Previous Experience: Students with prior academic work in drama
therapy taught by a Registered Drama Therapist or equivalent
psychology classes will meet with the Director of the Drama Therapy
Institute of Los Angeles to determine equivalencies for course credit
in the Certificate Program.
Tuition and fees:
Each three-credit course is $456 and is designed to include 45 hours,
which includes homework time. Each l unit class is $154
Applications:
An application may be obtained at any time. Individuals interested in
specific courses rather than the Certificate program as a whole may
sign up for any course.
Supervision Classes and/or Individual Supervision: All students are required
to take a minimum of 6 units of supervision either through a class
such as Drama Therapy Internship or arranged individually with a
supervisor.
Credit for
classes is offered in training units (closely equivalent to formula
used by university) for students and professionals and also in
continuing education credits (CEU) for MFTs and LCSWs. One hour of
class is equal to one CEU. The Drama Therapy Institute of Los Angeles
has been approved as a provider (# PCE- 3906) for continuing
education credits for the MFT and LCSW. The following Schedule of
Classes is tentative depending on student needs in a particular
school year.
The Drama Therapy
Institute of Los Angeles is on the quarter system. Three-unit classes
are usually scheduled on Saturday. 1 or .5 unit classes may be
scheduled on Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday.
DT - 101 Drama
Therapy (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Explores
projective techniques of drama therapy including masks, puppets, life
size dolls and art as well as psychodramatic techniques of role
reversal, doubling, interviewing and mirroring. Class will be
designed to challenge the participants at their level of experience.

Creative Drama (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Explores the
theory and practice of creative drama in educational and therapeutic
setting. Demonstrates and offers experiential practice in using the
techniques of story dramatization, ongoing drama, pantomime, theatre
games, and other informal drama processes with a therapeutic purpose.

Creative Arts Therapies (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Explores
therapeutic uses of movement, art, music, poetry and drama in
individual and group psychotherapy. Participants will explore each of
the creative arts therapies through experiential exercises and
special assignments. Participants will be invited to discover methods
of integrating drama and creative arts therapies from a narrative
perspective. Applications to various populations and treatment
settings will be given.
DT - 104 Drama
Therapy with Special Populations (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Demonstrates how
to use drama therapy effectively with special populations, including
adult psychiatric population, emotionally disturbed children and
teens, and other populations of interest. Course will also examine
culturally sensitive ways of utilizing drama therapy and creative
arts with individuals of differing cultural, ethnic and religious
backgrounds.

Psychodrama (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Course studies
the fundamentals of psychodrama and the specific techniques of role
reversal, soliloquy, interviewing, concretization, walk and talk,
doubling, mirrors, sculpting, action sociograms and more. Students
will explore the psychodramatic spiral and set up a psychodrama
stage. Drama, art, and movement techniques will be integrated within
the psychodrama structure to expand ways of working.

Ethical and Legal Issues (Core- 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Explores the
Ethical and Legal problems associated with being a drama therapist. Class will work with
hypothetical ethical and legal situations enacted in class as
vignettes that illustrate issues, problems, and possible solutions.

Scripts: Advanced Practice Drama Therapy (Advanced Practice: 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Experience
personal growth and explore various ways of practicing drama therapy
through theater and drama forms, culminating in a life script,
experimental theater piece, creative drama, psychodrama, sociodrama
and performance art. Experiential work will assist the group in
understanding the concepts and techniques as applied to a variety of
clinical settings and populations. Class will culminate in the
performance of several life scripts.

Therapy Advanced Practice: Assessment & Treatment (Advanced Practice: 3 units or 24 CEUs)
Exploration
of Narradrama with experiential practice in utilizing techniques of
externalization, storying, unique outcomes, scaffolding and landscapes of action and restorying. Participants will create
materials (i.e. masks, puppets) and rituals, which signify important
changes, decisions and transformations.
Students will experience and become familiar with insider
groups, reflecting team, consulting the consultants and performance of new meaning.
